BOTOX® contains botulinum toxin, a substance that temporarily blocks signals from the brain that tell a muscle to contract. This allows the muscle to relax and relieves tension. BOTOX® normally lasts 3-4 months and slowly wears off. It is used to treat chronic migraines, clenching, bruxism (grinding teeth), "gummy" smiles, and facial asymmetries. There is also a cosmetic bonus when treating these symptoms. While being used for therapeutic purposes, BOTOX® can also lessen wrinkles and unwanted lines on the face. There are 4 main types of botulinum toxin available, but Mount Olympus Dental uses the BOTOX® brand because it tends to last longer and is the only FDA approved brand to treat frown lines, crow's feet, and forehead lines. For more information about cost and the risks and benefits of BOTOX®, please give our office a call or talk to one of our staff members at your next appointment.
BOTOX® is measured in units and is sold by the unit. Prior to the procedure, each patient will be individually assessed for how many units will be needed and markings will be placed at injection sites. BOTOX® will then be injected into the face in multiple locations to achieve the desired effect. Our office uses very small needles to limit the amount of pain felt. We also use a vibration anesthesia device to reduce discomfort, if desired.
BOTOX® injections are considered relatively safe when given by a trained professional. Dr. Russell Parkin trained under a master injector and is certified to administer BOTOX® and dermal fillers. This training includes a thorough knowledge of facial anatomy for both safety and esthetic purposes. Dr. Russell Parkin will do an individualized assessment and advise you on the procedure to help determine if it best suits your needs and health.
You can return to most daily activities right after the procedure. Some people may experience pain, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites. It usually takes 1-3 days to begin to see results from BOTOX® injections and about 2 weeks to see full results. Depending on the problem being treated, the effect may last three months or longer. To maintain the effect, you'll need regular follow-up injections.
